Oaxaca City Guide

Oaxaca, a city rich in Mexican culture, cuisine, and crafts, will touch all of your senses. Though we spent only two nights in the city, I would recommend staying longer as there’s so much to see and experience. Here are some of my favorite places:

AMA

At the entry level, you'll find a cute coffee shop called Muss, but be sure not to miss the sister restaurant on the rooftop overlooking the city. Oaxaca city can feel busy, and this hidden gem offers a perfect break away from the noise. The focus here is on local, sustainable ingredients and seasonal produce.

1050 Colectivo

1050 Colectivo is a collective of artisans from across Oaxaca, showcasing the region's rich tradition of craftsmanship. Here, you can find handcrafted ceramics and other artisanal goods. It's not just a place to shop; it's an opportunity to learn about the crafts and the people who make them.

Los Danzantes

Los Danzantes blends traditional Oaxacan flavors with modern culinary techniques. The restaurant is known for its beautiful courtyard setting and a wide selection of mezcal. The ambiance is great, and the experience is definitely worth it.

Casa Oaxaca

Casa Oaxaca is both a boutique hotel and a renowned restaurant. The restaurant is a must-visit for foodies. Offering a farm-to-table experience, the menu features fresh, local ingredients prepared with care. Dining here offers a glimpse into the essence of Oaxacan cuisine.

Criollo

Set in a beautiful, open-air space, Criollo provides a casual yet refined dining experience. Note that they only offer a tasting menu, so make sure you’re hungry when you book!

Be Studio

Be Studio is a beautiful boutique studio offering yoga, pilates, and barre. Check their schedule for special events or drop in for a yoga session to unwind after running around town.

La Cosecha Organic Market

La Cosecha Organic Market is a vibrant spot where locals and tourists can find organic produce, artisanal products, and Mexican food. This market is a testament to Oaxaca's rich agricultural tradition and its community's commitment to sustainability.

Boulenc

Boulenc is an artisanal bakery and café known for its organic, high-quality ingredients, bread, pastries, and wood-fired pizzas. It’s a favorite spot for breakfast and lunch. There might be a queue, as it's popular among both locals and tourists!

Alberly Sombreros

Stop by Alberly Sombreros to pick out a cool hat, or have one customized in-store. With a huge selection of styles, colors, sizes, and details, you're sure to find something you like. Given Oaxaca city's heat, a hat could be a good way to protect yourself from the sun!

Glou Glou

Also, if you happen to be in Puerto Escondido, make sure to have a meal at Glou Glou. It’s a vibrant wine bar and restaurant known for its selection of natural wines. We had one of our best dinners here, and the stunning open-air restaurant is really worth a visit. You may want to reserve tables at the more upscale restaurants, but I'd also encourage wandering the streets to explore the city. Shops, cafes, and food stalls are everywhere, and you might stumble upon the most magical little place without even searching.
